Celebrating the stellar academic achievements of more than 3,000 students, Cal State L.A.Âs 49th Honors Convocation will take place Friday, April 23, at 7 p.m. in the Eagles Nest Gymnasium. The formal ceremony will be followed by individual College programs and receptions.
Coordinated by the Division of Academic Affairs, FridayÂs special program will honor Cal State L.A. students whose academic records place them in the top fifth percentile of their peersÂalong with DeanÂs List honorees, recipients of scholarships and grants, incoming freshmen with high grade-point averages, and G.E. honors program participants.
Delivering this yearÂs keynote address will be Cal State L.A. alumna Leana Wen, M.D., a resident physician in the Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Brigham & WomenÂs/
Massachusetts General Hospital.
At 18, Dr. Wen graduated summa cum laude from Cal State L.A., earning a B.S. in biochemistry and garnering a Phi Kappa Phi Graduate Fellowship. She was one of two students selected to accompany New York Times journalist Nicholas Kristof on a journey to Africa in 2007. From 2005 to 2006, she served as the national president of the American Medical Student Association. In 2006, she was selected as a Rhodes Scholar to study at the University of Oxford in England. Dr. Wen also served as a Global Health Fellow at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, where she researched trade policies and access to medicines. As a Department of Defense David L.
