Three nationally-ranked teams ready to start seasons

Cal State L.A. has three nationally-ranked teams that are busy preparing for the start of their 2010 seasons.
Cal State L.A.Âs volleyball team, ranked 14th in the American Volleyball Coaches AssociationÂs national pre-season poll, will open the season with a Cal State L.A./Cal Poly Pomona invitational tournament beginning on Thursday, Sept. 2, in the Eagles Nest Gymnasium. Cal State L.A. will host Northwood (MI) to start the tournament on Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. before challenging Simon Fraser and Academy of Art in matches at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Sept. 3, and concluding the tournament with a match against Dixie State on Saturday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m.
The Golden Eagles will begin its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play at home on Friday, Sept. 10, against Chico State. Cal State L.A. has been picked to finish third in the conference by the CCAA coaches. The Golden Eagles have five starters and 10 players returning from last seasonÂs squad, which went 23-9 overall and advanced to the NCAA Division II West Region championship match.
Cal State L.A.Âs menÂs soccer team, which earned a No. 1-ranking last season and hosted the NCAA Division II West Region playoffs, will open its 2010 season with a home contest against Biola on Thursday, Sept. 2, at 4 p.m. The Golden Eagles captured the CCAA South Division title last season and put together an 18-4-1 overall record.
Cal State L.A. is ranked 12th in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) in its pre-season poll. The Golden Eagles have three starters and eight players returning from last yearÂs team, which compiled a conference-best 13-2-1 record.

Cal State L.A.Âs womenÂs soccer team, which earned the first CCAA championship in the programÂs history in 2009, will not play its first home game until Friday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m. against San Francisco State. The Golden Eagles have been ranked 14th in the nation by the NSCAA and have been tabbed as the co-favorites to win the conference championship.
The Golden Eagles set a new program record for wins last season with 17 and captured the CCAA crown with a 12-2-2 regular-season record and tournament shutout wins over Chico State and Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Cal State L.A. has seven starters returning from last yearÂs team, including West Region Most Valuable Player Liz Franco. She set a new program record last season with 43 total points on 13 goals and 17 assists. The 17 assists set new program and CCAA single-season records.
Cal State L.A.Âs cross country team, which won a West Region championship in 2006 and a conference title in 2007, will open its season on Saturday, Sept. 4, at Cal State FullertonÂs Season Opener. The Golden Eagles have three returning runners from last yearÂs squad that finished third in the CCAA.
