Itzhak & Rohan  Amazing string duo hits Luckman stage
Violin virtuoso, joined by internationally acclaimed pianist, to perform at Cal State L.A. Jan. 23

He performed at Barack ObamaÂs presidential inauguration. He did the ÂEd Sullivan Show and ÂSesame Street. Now violin virtuoso Itzhak Perlman, joined by internationally acclaimed pianist Rohan de Silva, will perform at the Luckman Theatre on the Cal State L.A. campus Saturday, Jan. 23, 8 p.m.
With this opportunity, the Luckman Fine Arts Complex offers a rare musical treat to the Southland.
In a 2007 review of a recital by Perlman and de Silva, Michael Katz of San Francisco Classical Voice wrote: Â[de Silva] complemented Perlman unerringly in tempo, dynamics, and tone. But the impression left was far beyond technical. As Katz described it, Â[where] PerlmanÂs violin was bright sunlight, de SilvaÂs piano was shimmering blue water.Â
Perlman is widely considered as one of the preeminent violin virtuosi of the 20th century. Since his 1958 appearance as a teenage prodigy on the ÂEd Sullivan Show, he has been revitalizing classical music in an age when many could easily forget it.
Between performing and producing albums, he has earned 15 Grammys and 4 Emmys from categories, such as ÂBest Classical Album and ÂBest Instrumental Performance, both with and without an orchestra. His has been on the cover of Newsweek. Harvard and Yale have granted him honorary degrees. President Reagan awarded him the Medal of Liberty; and President Clinton presented him the National Medal of Arts.
Perlman has been a soloist for a number of movie scores, notably that of the 1993 film ÂSchindlerÂs List by John Williams, which won an Academy Award for best score. As artistic director of the Westchester Philharmonic, PerlmanÂs selections for this past spring included RavelÂs sweeping, aqueous ÂLe Tombeau de Couperin and StravinskyÂs ÂPulcinella Suite.Â
Performing alongside Perlman will be de Silva, a pianist of exceptional talent who has, in recent years, taught at the Perlman Music Program in Long Island. The program was spearheaded by Perlman to mentor young musicians of promise from all over the world. Previously, de Silva was on the Collaborative Arts and Chamber Music faculty at the Julliard School. He has accompanied many other illustrious violinists, including Joshua Bell and Midori Goto.
