LOS ANGELES AREA PERFORMANCE
AT LUCKMAN THEATRE MARCH 23
With conductor and pianist Philippe Entremont, this leading
will feature Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals narrated by actress Claire Bloom
The Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, with conductor and pianist Philippe Entremont, makes a rare Los Angeles area performance at Cal State L.A.'s Luckman Theatre on Saturday, March 23 at 8 p.m.
One of the world's leading chamber orchestras, the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra will perform selections from Brahms, Roussel and Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals, narrated by actress acclaimed Claire Bloom.
After giving its first concerts at the 1955 Holland Festival, the orchestra appeared at the Edinburgh Festival later that same year. It has since made concert tours to many countries including the United States, Australia, Japan, Canada and Latin America, in addition to appearing throughout Europe. In 1980, the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra was the first Dutch orchestra to perform in the People's Republic of China.
In January 1993, noted pianist and conductor Philippe Entremont, Lifetime Music Director of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, was named Principal Conductor of the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra. Entremont is internationally renowned as an artist of remarkable technique and style at the keyboard and on the podium. In early 1993 he led the ensemble on a seventeen-city United States tour, including engagements at Carnegie Hall and at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Guest conducting engagements included appearances with the symphonies of Houston, New Orleans and Milwaukee.
In June of that year, he returned to the New York Philharmonic as the piano soloist for Leonard Bernstein's "Age of Anxiety" (Symphony No. 2) with Leonard Slatkin conducting, as part of the orchestra's 150th anniversary season celebration. Entremont gave the world premiere of the final version of the work under the baton of Bernstein.
Entremont's recordings are numerous and include a four-disc set of the complete Mozart piano sonatas on the Pro Arte label and five Haydn symphonies on the Harmonia Mundi label.
Actress Claire Bloom, who has received recognition for stage, television and movie roles in the United States and Great Britain, will narrate Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals as a featured portion of the evening's program.
