Los
Angeles  The
Luckman Fine Arts Complex continues its new Interactive Jazz
Experience Series with ÂPenumbra by the Bennie Maupin
Ensemble. Tenor sax and bass clarinet virtuoso Bennie Maupin, who
is a member of the Luckman Jazz Orchestra, will headline the
interactive program of music and conversation in the Intimate
Theatre at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex, Cal State L.A., on
Sunday, November 6 at
3:00 p.m.
ÂPenumbra, from
the CD of the same name, will feature Bennie Maupin
(composer, woodwinds), plus Darek Oles (acoustic bass),
Michael Stephans (drums/spoken word), and Munyungo Jackson
(percussion). The ensemble creates Âa distinctive musical
tapestry, a sort of musical warp and woof, with all threads
different from one another, yet all leading into symmetrical,
unified patterns.Â
The Interactive
Jazz Experience Series is designed to allow jazz aficionados
to hear the music close up and have a conversation with the
artists in the comfortable, informal setting of the 250-seat
Intimate Theatre. Each of the series Sunday afternoon
performances feature members of the Luckman Jazz Orchestra (LJO)
and other well-known jazz musicians. The initial offering in the
series, ÂDrums in Good Company on October 16, 2005, engaged the
audience in dialogue with drummers Ndugu Chancler of the LJO,
Albert ÂTootie Heath, and Clayton Cameron, and culminated in a
stirring mini-jam session which also featured Greg Swiller (bass)
and Phil Wright (piano).
Next in the series
is brass ensemble Purple Gums on
Sunday, April 9,
2006.
William Roper (tuba) of the LJO, Bobby Bradford (cornet), and
Francis Wong (tenor sax), will be joined by guest cellist Erika
Duke-Kirkpatrick for a wild session of jazz, ragtime, and
classical music.
