How central are we?
Located in one of the nation's leading cultural, business and economic centers, Cal State
L.A. also plays a significant international role as part of the Pacific Rim community. The
campus is enlivened by the flourishing San Gabriel cities of Alhambra, Monterey Park,
Pasadena, South Pasadena, as well as the historic Los Angeles neighborhoods from which the
great City of the Angels was born.
Only minutes from the city's thriving Civic Center, Cal State L.A. is at the intersection
of two major freeways, making it simple to get to and from the vast resource that is Los
Angeles--mountains, beaches, museums, educational institutions, cultural centers, major
sports centers and the "entertainment center of the world."
Who are our students?
As part of one of the most interesting and unique student bodies in the world, you'll be
at the heart of a campus community that represents the diversity of a world center. Our
19,000 students range from their early teens to their 80s, and come from all over
California, most of the 50 states and approximately 120 other nations! At Cal State L.A.
your learning experience isn't limited to the classroom and laboratory.... you also learn
from colleagues and teachers whose backgrounds differ from, and enrich, your own.
Meet our award-winning faculty...
Come to Cal State L.A., and you're at a University with an undergraduate focus--a place
where our internationally-honored faculty really care about
teaching and about their students. Here, undergraduates know their professors and have
opportunities to work with them on major research projects from broadcasting to
biochemistry. (Undergraduates in engineering are working with faculty on a NASA project to
build a space telescope model. Under professional faculty guidance, dance majors have
formed a troupe that has performed in New York City.) Our faculty includes
nationally-recognized writers, artists, public policy, education and business experts, and
renowned scientists. (Recently, an outstanding chemistry professor received the first
Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring in a
special White House ceremony.)
How lively do you want your campus life?
There are hundreds of ways to get involved at Cal State L.A. You can join student
government, volunteer in the community through our EPIC program, or choose from activities
offered by more than 120 organizations and clubs, a newly-renovated student center--the University-Student Union--and the world-class Luckman Fine Arts Complex that includes the 1,200 seat Luckman Theatre and the Luckman Gallery, noted for its changing exhibitions and growing art collection.
