What is NOAA-CREST West?

NOAA-CREST West was established at California State University, Los Angeles (Cal State LA) in 2011 to expand the NOAA-CREST program by supporting graduate level research at Cal State LA and incorporating K-12 student involvement. This is accomplished through NOAA-CREST West's many non-profit informal education partners, support for internships and research for qualified graduate and undergraduate students, and especially through the Multinational Youth Studying Practical Applications of Climatic Events program (M.Y.  S.P.A.C.E.), a component of the Satellites & Education Conference. This annual conference is presented by the Satellite Educators Association and hosted by Cal State LA's Charter College of Education.

M.Y. S.P.A.C.E. is an international collaborative of high school students engaged in ongoing, self-selected research projects on the local impact of global environmental issues. Students work with their own, trained Teacher Leaders at their school sites using both locally generated and satellite-based data with support from NOAA and NASA. Teams from each school meet at the annual Satellites & Education Conference to discover global trends in their collective data and present their findings. The conference, its M.Y. S.P.A.C.E. program, and graduate research are variously supported by NOAA's National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service (NESDIS), the National Weather Service, and a grant from NOAA-CREST West.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the United States Department of Commerce established the NOAA Educational Partnership Program (NOAA EPP) with five Cooperative Science Centers (NOAA CSC) in 2001 and 2006 at minority serving institutions to advance collaborative research in the NOAA-mission sciences. The Center Director and Distinguished Scientist at each Center develop and lead key education and research activities.

The Cooperative Remote Sensing Science and Technology Center (NOAA-CREST) at the City College of New York (CCNY) is a NOAA Cooperative Science Center funded by NOAA/EPP Grant #NA11SEC4810004. NOAA-CREST is a consortium of five universities plus acaddmic and industrial partners. NOAA-CREST West at Cal State LA is a NOAA-CREST Consortium member funded as a sub-grant of NOAA-CREST. Cal State LA the only NOAA-CREST Consortium member on the west coast and the only one with an internationally active K-12 research program.
