Department of Liberal Studies

Welcome to Liberal Studies

Our Curriculum

The Department of Liberal Studies offers an engaging and proven interdisciplinary curriculum that is unique within southern California. Drawing from interdisciplinary fields such as American studies, cultural studies, and women’s and gender studies, we provide students the opportunity to study a variety of different subjects in an integrated and coherent baccalaureate program that prepares them for post-graduate work and careers in teaching, law, medicine, business, library science, and a variety of other fields. In the Liberal Studies major, students take courses in the arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences that are appropriate for their chosen option and depth area. At the center of our curriculum, students take courses in Liberal Studies that help them understand how disciplines work, how they differ from one another, and how they fit together into a bigger picture. In Liberal Studies courses students learn methods for conducting research, writing, and integrating knowledge from many subjects at once. The courses and curriculum of Liberal Studies also place an emphasis on civic and community engagement. Liberal Studies has distinguished professors that are dedicated to helping our students perform at a high level and achieve their educational and career goals.

Welcome from the Chair

We believe that the best education is one that is self-motivated and self-directed. Our goal is to help students create academic and career plans that will excite them, and to help students build a foundation of knowledge and skills that will benefit them for their entire lives. We invite you to join us in the exciting future that awaits you in the Department of Liberal Studies.
