Aiken Quiz Question Format


Aiken is a format that allows you to quickly and easily import questions into a Moodle question bank from a text file created from a PC or Mac text editor. Aiken question format can only be used to make multiple choice and true/false questions. This format is an alternative for users who cannot use Respondus Quiz Builder (Windows only software).

Formatting Quiz Document


  • Must be created as a text file saved with UTF-8 format.  Recommended text editors: Windows Notepad, Mac TextEdit as plain text.
  • Characters that are not part of ASCII can cause errors (Ex. Quotes)
  • All answer letters (A,B,C etc.) and the word "ANSWER" must be capitalized
  • Question text must all be on one line.
  • Each letter choice answer must start with an uppercase letter and either a period ‘.’ or bracket ‘)’ and then a space.
  • The answer for the question must immediately follow the letter choices with “ANSWER: ” (Note: the space after the colon matters) in all capital letters and then the given right answer in captial letter as well.

Note: Make sure that UTF-8 Encoding has been selected when saving your text file using Notepad or TextEdit (Mac).

Creating quiz using Aiken

  1. Create Moodle Quiz
  2. Create question category to help manage question banks
  3. Import Aiken formatted questions (see below)
  4. Adding category questions into Moodle quiz

Importing Questions into your Question Bank

  1. Log in to your course.
  2. Click on Gear Menu on the top right of your course.  
  3. Click More, located in the dropdown menu.
  4. At the bottom in the Question bank section, click on Import.
  5. Select Aiken or Blackboard under File format.
  6. If using the Aiken file format, click on the General heading to access and select the correct category using the Import category option down arrow.
  7. Drag and Drop your file under Import Questions from file.
  8. Click on Import.
