Dean’s Message

Dr. Cheryl Ney

Here we are at the start of Spring Semester 2019!  Welcome back to your academic pursuits!

With the historic LAUSD strike unfolding before us, we find ourselves faced with an interesting context for the field of education in Los Angeles and beyond.  Alia Wong, who interviewed striking teachers for her feature in The Atlantic (January 14, 2019) said, “…when asked how their own background may have informed their take on the strike, almost every LAUSD teacher I interviewed used the word “personal”.”

I have come to know that the CCOE commitment to educator preparation is also enlivened by the personal commitment of our faculty, staff, and administrative team.  It is so enriching to see how that personal commitment leads to the compassionate and high-quality training that prepares our students to become exceptional and caring educators – counselors, teachers, and educational leaders – committed to inclusivity, student success, and the value of all individuals in our communities.  That is something worth fighting for, and something we are seeing demonstrated on the streets of Los Angeles right now as educators take part in what for many will be the most important civic engagement of their lives!

So my hope for you in our academic arena this spring is that you remember to make all of your efforts personal. By doing so, you will enhance your personal, intellectual and professional development!

Warmly,

Dean Cheryl L. Ney
